Cat Got Your Tongue is challenge #8. Isaac starts this challenge with Collectible Guppy's Head iconGuppy's Head, Collectible Guppy's Tail iconGuppy's Tail, and Collectible Guppy's Hairball iconGuppy's Hairball, as well as three Soul HeartSoul Hearts and three Black HeartBlack Hearts, as well as his usual three Red Heart containers. Isaac is also blindfolded. This challenge is unlocked by transforming into GuppyGuppy. The goal is to defeat Boss Mom ingameMom.

Difficulty[ | ]

  • As a result of the blindfolded status, tears cannot be used, and Isaac must rely heavily on the erratic movement of Guppy's Hairball to do damage.

Strategy[ | ]

  • Because Isaac starts with 3 Guppy items, he begins the challenge as GuppyGuppy, which grants flight (a good way of avoiding damage) and generates Blue Flies when dealing damage with familiars or a co-op baby.
  • Guppy's Hairball also creates blue flies when dealing damage, making it considerably stronger than normal. (in Afterbirth †)This feature is unique to challenges where Isaac is blindfolded.
  • Due to this challenge requiring the player to get up close and personal to enemies, ones that explode upon defeat can pose considerable risk to the player. It's recommended to let the generated flies fight the explosive enemies for you.
  • Guppy's Hairball is very difficult to control. It would be wise to spend the first few attempts at the challenge by practicing with it before a real attempt at completing the challenge is made.
    • Anything that increases movement speed can make Guppy's Hairball somewhat easier to use. The extra speed will allow for more precise control while also increasing the range indirectly at which the Hairball can safely be swung. Conversely, any speed down will hinder control over Guppy's Hairball.

  • Buying Collectible 9 Volt icon9 Volt from a Shop allows Guppy's Head to be activated multiple times within a room.
    • (except in Rebirth)Collectible Car Battery iconCar Battery allows more Blue Flies to be spawned by Guppy's Head at once.
    • Collectible The Battery iconThe Battery can make Guppy's Head store two charges, allowing better burst damage.
  • Obtaining (in Afterbirth † and Repentance)Fish TailFish Tail will double all blue flies generated.
  • Collectible Hive Mind iconHive Mind doubles damage dealt by Blue Flies.

  • Any shooting familiar will not only deal more reliable damage but will also summon a fly if they hit an enemy.
  • Orbitals, such as Collectible Cube of Meat iconCube of Meat and Collectible Sacrificial Dagger iconSacrificial Dagger, can be more effective than Guppy's Hairball at blocking and dealing damage at close range.
  • (except in Rebirth)Collectible Incubus iconIncubus and (in Repentance)Collectible Twisted Pair iconTwisted Pair are notable items for easing up the challenge, as they shoot the same tears as Isaac normally would if not blindfolded.
  • Collectible Bob's Brain iconBob's Brain, while dangerous, can serve as a reliable massive damage dealer.
  • Collectible BFFS! iconBFFS! makes all familiars bigger, as well as doubling all familiars' damage, including those of Guppy's Hairball.

  • Collectible Red Candle iconRed Candle or Collectible The Candle iconThe Candle can be useful alternatives to Guppy's Head, depending on the situation.
  • (except in Rebirth)Collectible Spear Of Destiny iconSpear Of Destiny can trivialize the challenge by providing an easy-to-use alternative for dealing damage.
  • (in Repentance)Collectible Monstrance iconMonstrance provides a large damaging aura that can be used as an alternative or in conjunction with Guppy's Hairball.
  • Because this challenge starts with Isaac having a lot of HP, restarting the challenge until getting a sacrifice room which teleports to an angel room with (in Repentance)Collectible Revelation iconRevelation in it, or alternatively, until getting a red chest in curse room which teleports into a devil room with (except in Rebirth)Collectible Maw Of The Void iconMaw Of The Void, basically guarantees a win since Isaac can use those items while blindfolded, providing an easy way to deal damage.

Trivia[ | ]

  • "Cat got your tongue" is an idiom for when people are speechless.
  • Aside from the obvious change in language, the Korean unlock for the challenge is notably different. Instead of a cat vomiting a hairball, it seems to depict a cat eating the hairball back.
