A Lump of Coal is an unlockable passive item.

Effect[edit | edit source]

  • Tears gain a flat damage bonus based on how far they travel. This starts at +0 and increases to about +6 at a standard room's width (but can go higher).

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • The item has somewhat of an opposite effect of the item Proptosis ProptosisProptosis Rebirth Icon.pngTears start out massive with high damage, and then shrink down and become weaker over a short range., which makes Isaac deal more damage at close range. Proptosis is based on a shrinking multiplier instead of an increasing flat bonus, however.

Synergies[edit | edit source]

  • Godhead GodheadGodhead Icon.pngIncreases damage and range while reducing tears and shot speed. Grants homing tears and tears gain a damaging halo.: Tears and more importantly their auras will increase in size and damage the farther they travel.
  • Hook Worm Hook WormHook Worm Icon.pngTears move shifting left to right forming a path of right angles. +10 to Range (effective range remains about the same).: The movement pattern increases Coal's damage at same effective distance.
  • The Ludovico Technique The Ludovico TechniqueThe Ludovico Technique Icon.pngInstead of firing tears, Isaac controls one floating tear that hover over obstacles. This tear deals constant damage when held in place over an enemy.: Increases the tear's damage and size the farther the tear is from Isaac. Even at close range it will still do about +3.5 damage.
  • My Reflection My ReflectionMy Reflection Icon.pngGives Isaac's tears a boomerang effect, and increases range and shot speed.: Hitting enemies with tears that initially missed will grant possibly considerable extra damage.
  • Added in Afterbirth †Pop! Pop!Pop! Icon.pngReplaces Isaac's tears with eyeballs that can bounce off of each other. The eyeballs are not limited by range, and will instead dissipate when they stop moving or when hitting an enemy or obstacle.: Tears will increase their damage and size as they travel, and they are not limited by range.
  • Soy Milk Soy MilkSoy Milk Icon.pngTears shrink and do much less damage, but fire in very rapid succession.: Coal's flat damage increase is applied after Soy's reduction, so tears gain the full benefit from Coal.
  • Tiny Planet Tiny PlanetTiny Planet Icon.pngRange up and makes shot tears revolve around Isaac until they drop.: The movement pattern allows much longer airtime and reasonably easy way to hit enemies with the powered up tears.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

  • Anti-Gravity Anti-GravityAnti-Gravity Icon.png-2 Tear Delay. Tears float in position until firing ceases, after which they will fly off in the direction they were shot in.: Despite the tears visually growing while they hover, they will still only deal bonus damage based strictly on how far they travel. If the enemy hits the tears by running into them, Coal will add no damage.
    • Added in Afterbirth † Tears no longer grow while hovering.
  • Added in AfterbirthAthame AthameAthame Icon.pngWhenever Isaac takes damage, a black ring briefly appears around Isaac, dealing damage to all nearby enemies.: Damage of the Athame ring is halved.
    • Added in Afterbirth † The ring deals normal damage.
  • Brimstone BrimstoneBrimstone Rebirth Icon.pngTears are replaced by a laser beam that pierces through all enemies and obstacles in its path and deals high damage. Can only be fired after a short charge-up period.: +2 Flat Damage
    • Added in Afterbirth Beam will gradually increase in size and damage the farther it travels, on a multiplier that is roughly +20% per tile of distance.
    • Brimstone + The Ludovico Technique The Ludovico TechniqueThe Ludovico Technique Icon.pngInstead of firing tears, Isaac controls one floating tear that hover over obstacles. This tear deals constant damage when held in place over an enemy.: Makes the Brimstone circle widen and deal damage based on how far away it is from your character. At very close ranges, damage is reduced to about 73% (unlike normal Coal effects).
  • Added in AfterbirthDiplopia DiplopiaDiplopia Icon.pngOne time useDuplicates all pickups and item pedestals in the room.: No benefit from an additional Lump.
  • Dr. Fetus Dr. FetusDr. Fetus Icon.pngTears are replaced by bombs that benefit from bomb-enhancing effects and slide for a fixed time after being fired.: No benefit though the bombs appear darker.
  • Epic Fetus Epic FetusEpic Fetus Icon.pngIsaac's tears are replaced with guided missiles, like those used by the Doctor's Remote.: No benefit.
  • Added in Afterbirth †Lachryphagy LachryphagyLachryphagy Icon.pngIsaac's tears decelerate as they travel. Upon stopping or hitting an obstacle, they burst into 8 tears in all directions. Tears can be fired into other tears to feed them, increasing their damage.: Tears will grow until they burst, though their actual damage bonus is only based on distance traveled. Burst tears will also grow as they travel.
  • Added in AfterbirthMaw of the Void Maw of the VoidMaw of the Void Icon.png+1.0 Damage Up. After continuously firing tears for 2.5 seconds, a red cross appears on Isaac's head that, upon releasing the fire button, creates a black ring that rapidly deals damage equal to Isaac's tear damage to any enemies in contact with it.: Damage of the Maw ring is halved.
    • Added in Afterbirth † The ring deals normal damage.
  • Mom's Knife Mom's KnifeMom's Knife Rebirth Icon.pngIsaac's tears are replaced by a knife that pierces enemies, can travel through obstacles, and can hurt enemies while Isaac is holding it. Holding down the fire button before firing increases its range and power.: No benefit.
  • Added in Afterbirth †Ouroboros Worm Ouroboros WormOuroboros Worm Icon.pngTears travel in a large spiral pattern and become spectral. / Ring Worm Ring WormRing Worm Icon.pngGives Isaac spinning shots.: The peculiar movement patterns result in overall less damage from the same effective distance.
  • Proptosis ProptosisProptosis Rebirth Icon.pngTears start out massive with high damage, and then shrink down and become weaker over a short range.: Proptosis scales with Isaac's damage while the Coal does not. At base damage, tears will have approximately the same damage at any range; with increased damage, tears do more damage up close.
  • Technology TechnologyTechnology Icon.pngReplaces tears with a piercing laser with unlimited range.: No benefit.
    • Added in Afterbirth Damage increases the further away the enemy is, on a multiplier that is roughly +20% per tile of distance.
  • Technology 2 Technology 2Technology 2 Icon.pngDecreases damage and replaces right eye tears with a unlimited range, piercing laser which fires continuously.: No benefit.
    • Added in Afterbirth Damage increases the further away the enemy is, on a multiplier that is roughly +20% per tile of distance.
  • Added in AfterbirthTech X Tech XTech X Icon.pngTears are replaced with laser rings that pierce through enemies and deal damage to enemies within them. Can be charged to increase the size of the ring.: The laser ring will grow as the ring distances itself from the player, but will shrink as the player approaches it. Damage increases the further away the enemy is.
  • Added in Afterbirth †Trisagion TrisagionTrisagion Icon.pngTears are replaced with piercing white blasts of light.: The damage of the blasts is increased by a negligible amount.
  • Wiggle Worm Wiggle WormWiggle Worm Icon.pngGives Isaac's shots a wave-like trajectory. +0.3 Tears up.: No relevant additional benefit.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In Western culture, children are commonly told that if they behave badly during the year, they will receive a piece of coal for Christmas.
    • This makes A Lump of Coal a fitting item for Krampus to drop, based on his origins.
