A Lump of Coal is an unlockable passive item.

Effect[edit | edit source]

  • Tears gain a flat damage bonus based on how far they travel. This starts at +0 and increases to about +6 at a standard room's width (but can go higher).

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • The item has the opposite effect of the item Proptosis Proptosis
Proptosis Icon.pngTears start out massive with high damage, and then shrink down and become weaker over a short range.
, which makes Isaac deal more damage at close range.

Synergies[edit | edit source]

  • Added in Afterbirth † Compound Fracture Compound Fracture
Compound Fracture Icon.pngIncreases range. Tears turn into bones, which shatter into 1-3 bone shards upon hitting an enemy or obstacle.
: Bone tears will grow in size and damage as they travel; however, bone shards will only increase in damage.
  • Added in Afterbirth Continuum Continuum
Continuum Icon.png+2.25 Range Up. +1.5 Tear Height. Isaac's tears travel through walls and appear out of the opposite wall. Isaac's tears also travel over rocks and objects.
: Combined with a good amount of range or shot speed, tears travel through the room walls back inside and deal even more damage.
  • Cricket's Body Cricket's Body
Cricket's Body Icon.pngGrants -1 Tear Delay and reduces Range. When tears hit an object or deplete their range, they spawn 4 smaller tears, whose Range and Damage scale with Isaac's.
    /The Parasite The Parasite
The Parasite Icon.pngIsaac's tears split in two when they hit something.
: Fired tears will increase in size and damage as they travel. Split tears will increase in size and damage as well; however, the gradual increase in size is barely noticeable because split tears will disappear very quickly.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Euthanasia Euthanasia
Euthanasia Icon.pngAdds a chance to fire needles. If a needle kills an enemy, it bursts into more needles.
: Needles will increase in size and damage as they travel. Burst needles will also increase in size and damage.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Flat Stone Flat Stone
Flat Stone Icon.pngTears bounce off the floor. Tears that hit an enemy after bouncing deal splash damage to all nearby enemies for 25% of Isaac's tear damage.
: Tears will gain damage as they travel.
  • Godhead Godhead
Godhead Icon.pngIncreases damage and range while reducing tears and shot speed. Grants homing tears and tears gain a damaging halo.
: Tears and auras will increase in size and damage the farther they travel.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Haemolacria Haemolacria
Haemolacria Icon.pngTears are now fired in an arc. Upon hitting the floor, an obstacle, or an enemy, they burst into many smaller tears in all directions. Increases tear delay.
: Tears and burst tears will increase in damage the farther they travel.
  • Hook Worm Hook Worm
Hook Worm Icon.pngTears move shifting left to right forming a path of right angles. +10 to Range (effective range remains about the same).
: The extra distance traveled from zig-zagging increases Coal's damage.
  • The Ludovico Technique The Ludovico Technique
The Ludovico Technique Icon.pngInstead of firing tears, Isaac controls one floating tear that hover over obstacles. This tear deals constant damage when held in place over an enemy.
: Increases the tear's damage and size the farther the tear is from Isaac. Even at close range it will still do about +3.5 damage.
  • Mom's Perfume Mom's Perfume
Mom's Perfume Icon.pngAdds a chance to shoot fear tears and decreases tear delay by 1.
: Fear shots cause enemies to run away allowing Coal's damage to increase longer.
  • My Reflection My Reflection
My Reflection Icon.pngGives Isaac's tears a boomerang effect, and increases range and shot speed.
: Coal's bonus is based on total distance traveled so it does benefit (slightly) from Reflection.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Pop! Pop!
Pop! Icon.pngReplaces Isaac's tears with eyeballs that can bounce off of each other. The eyeballs are not limited by range, and will instead dissipate when they stop moving or when hitting an enemy or obstacle.
: Tears will increase their damage and size as they travel, and they are not limited by range.
  • Added in Afterbirth Pupula Duplex Pupula Duplex
    Pupula Duplex Icon.pngTransforms Isaac's tears into a wide arc shape which gives them a much larger hitbox. Gives Isaac spectral tears which allows them to travel through objects in the environment (i.e. rocks).}
: Tears will retain crescent shape and increase in damage based on how far they travel. Tears will very slowly increase in size as they travel.
  • Rubber Cement Rubber Cement
Rubber Cement Icon.pngTears bounce off walls, enemies, and environmental objects.
: It gains more air time with the bouncing, allowing for every bounce to add damage.
  • Soy Milk Soy Milk
Soy Milk Icon.pngTears shrink and do much less damage, but fire in very rapid succession.
: Coal's flat damage increase is applied after Soy's reduction, so tears gain the full benefit from Coal.
  • Added in Afterbirth Tape Worm Tape Worm
Tape Worm Icon.pngDoubles Isaac's range and halves his tear height.
: The significant range up increases Coal's damage potential, despite the shot height being halved.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Technology Zero Technology Zero
Technology Zero Icon.pngConnects Isaac's tears with electricity that can damage enemies.
: Electric lasers will increase in damage based on how far the tears travel.
  • Tiny Planet Tiny Planet
Tiny Planet Icon.pngRange up and makes shot tears revolve around Isaac until they drop.
: This item drastically increases the screen time of tears because it makes them orbit around Isaac for a few seconds. The character's tears gain about +15 damage for a fully orbited tear.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

  • Anti-Gravity Anti-Gravity
Anti-Gravity Icon.png-2 Tear Delay. Tears float in position until firing ceases, after which they will fly off in the direction they were shot in.
: Poor synergy - Despite the fact tears grow in size, they will still only deal bonus damage based strictly on how far they travel. If the enemy hits the tears by running into them, Coal will add no damage no matter how big the tears are.
  • Added in Afterbirth Athame Athame
Athame Icon.pngWhenever Isaac takes damage, a black ring briefly appears around Isaac, dealing damage to all nearby enemies.
: Damage of the Athame ring is halved.
    • Added in Afterbirth † This bug has been fixed; the ring deals normal damage.
  • Brimstone Brimstone
Brimstone Icon.pngTears are replaced by a laser beam that pierces through all enemies and obstacles in its path and deals high damage. Can only be fired after a short charge-up period.
+ The Ludovico Technique The Ludovico Technique
The Ludovico Technique Icon.pngInstead of firing tears, Isaac controls one floating tear that hover over obstacles. This tear deals constant damage when held in place over an enemy.
    - Makes the Brimstone circle widen and deal damage based on how far away it is from your character. At very close ranges, damage is reduced to about 73% (unlike normal Coal effects).
  • Brimstone Brimstone
Brimstone Icon.pngTears are replaced by a laser beam that pierces through all enemies and obstacles in its path and deals high damage. Can only be fired after a short charge-up period.
: No benefit though the beam color is darker.
    • Added in Afterbirth Beam will gradually increase in size and damage the farther it travels, on a multiplier that is roughly +20% per tile of distance.
  • Added in Afterbirth Diplopia Diplopia
Diplopia Icon.pngOne time useDuplicates all pickups and item pedestals in the room.
    : No benefit.
  • Dr. Fetus Dr. Fetus

: No benefit though the bombs appear darker.
  • Epic Fetus Epic Fetus
Epic Fetus Icon.pngIsaac's tears are replaced with guided missiles, like those used by the Doctor's Remote.
    : No benefit.
  • Ipecac Ipecac
Ipecac Icon.pngReplaces tears with explosive and poisoning projectiles fired in an arc from the mouth.
: Benefits exactly like normal tears.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Lachryphagy Lachryphagy
Lachryphagy Icon.pngIsaac's tears decelerate as they travel. Upon stopping or hitting an obstacle, they burst into 8 tears in all directions. Tears can be fired into other tears to feed them, increasing their damage.
: Tears will grow until they burst, though their actual damage bonus is only based on distance traveled. Burst tears will also grow as they travel.
  • Added in Afterbirth Maw of the Void Maw of the Void
Maw of the Void Icon.png+1.0 Damage Up. After continuously firing tears for 2.5 seconds, a red cross appears on Isaac's head that, upon releasing the fire button, creates a black ring that rapidly deals damage equal to Isaac's tear damage to any enemies in contact with it.
: Damage of the Maw ring is halved.
    • Added in Afterbirth † This bug has been fixed; the ring deals normal damage.
  • Mom's Knife Mom's Knife
Mom's Knife Icon.pngIsaac's tears are replaced by a knife that pierces enemies, can travel through obstacles, and can hurt enemies while Isaac is holding it. Holding down the fire button before firing increases its range and power.
    : No benefit.
  • Proptosis Proptosis
Proptosis Icon.pngTears start out massive with high damage, and then shrink down and become weaker over a short range.
: Proptosis scales with Isaac's damage while the Coal does not. At base damage, tears will have approximately the same damage at any range; with increased damage, tears do more damage up close.
  • Ring Worm Ring Worm
Ring Worm Icon.pngGives Isaac spinning shots.
    /Wiggle Worm Wiggle Worm
    Wiggle Worm Icon.pngGives Isaac's shots a wave-like trajectory.

    • Added in Afterbirth Damage increases the further away the enemy is, on a multiplier that is roughly +20% per tile of distance.
  • Added in Afterbirth Tech X Tech X
Tech X Icon.pngTears are replaced with laser rings that pierce through enemies and deal damage to enemies within them. Can be charged to increase the size of the ring.
: The laser ring will grow as the ring distances itself from the player, but will shrink as the player approaches it. Damage increases the further away the enemy is.
  • Added in Afterbirth † Trisagion Trisagion
Trisagion Icon.pngTears are replaced with piercing white blasts of light.
: The damage of the lasers is increased by a negligible amount.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In Western culture, children are commonly told that if they behave badly during the year, they will receive a piece of coal for Christmas.
    • This makes A Lump of Coal a fitting item for Krampus to drop, based on his origins.
